AEG Profiles

Published: February 2006

The Access to Employment Groups (AEGs) were established by the Employment Strategy Group (ESG), a sub-group of the Birmingham Strategic Partnership, and aim to co-ordinate and improve access to employment across the city at a local level. AEGs are co-ordinated by the Birmingham City Council's Economic Development Service and are composed of local offices of the ESG agencies along with officers from voluntary/community sector and local regeneration programmes, working together to map need and match interventions to that need. Their key aims include:

  • determining and understanding the needs of the local community in terms of access to employment;
  • identifying issues and barriers to employment;
  • mapping existing provision in the area;
  • matching provision to need; and
  • producing an action plan which includes improving the effectiveness of local service provision and identifying gaps in service provision and co-ordination of bids for additional resources.
