Local Area Profiles

Birmingham is a city of just under 1 million people, with an ethnic minority population of 29.6%, covering 267.8 square kilometres in the West Midlands conurbation. In such a large authority, city-wide figures mask significant variations in the characteristics of different areas and neighbourhoods.

This section includes a profile of the city as a whole plus profiles of its 40 wards and 10 constituencies, along with other ward based information. Although there is a good range of information at a ward level, some statistics are not available for confidentiality reasons. This applies to datasets where small numbers may be involved, such as ethnic data.

Birmingham's ward boundaries changed in June 2004 and the constiteuncy boundaries in 2007. Where possible we have provided data for the new wards and constituencies, but for the foreseeable future some official datasets will continue to use the pre-June 2004 boundaries. Historical data is, of course, available for the old wards only.
