Population

A range of basic fact sheets with information on Birmingham's population by ward, gender, ethnicity etc can be found on the Key Facts page within the Local Area section.

More detailed information on the population of the city from the 2001 Census can be found on the Birmingham City Council's Census pages on its website.

Deprivation

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has produced an Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) for every Local Authority in England covering:

  • Income
  • Employment
  • Health and Disability
  • Education
  • Skills and Training
  • Barriers to Housing and services
  • Living Environment
  • Crime

The Index is an important tool in identifying the most deprived areas of England. More detailed information on the IMD 2007 can be found on the Department of Communities and Local Government website.

The City Council and its partners are working to ensure that the benefits of urban renaissance and regeneration are made available to the areas and communities of the city suffering most from deprivation and unemployment. Details of this work can be found on the Birmingham City Council website.
