People with Disabilities in the Labour Market

Published: February 2005

In addition to everyday labour market forces of supply and demand which impact on participation in the labour market, people with disabilities are also subject to additional factors which impact on participation including severity of the disability, transport issues and discrimination.

A statistical exploration of these factors is impossible at the local level and very limited even at a national level due to lack of appropriate data sources. However, this short report looks at the number of people with disabilities who are economically active in Birmingham, using data from the Labour Force Survey.

It also looks at the number of people with disabilities in receipt of the following benefits:

  • Attendance Allowance;
  • Disability Living Allowance;
  • Incapacity Benefit; and
  • Severe Disablement Allowance.
