This document is one of a series of information sheets produced by the BEIC to highlight Key Facts about Birmingham.


Unemployment data for Birmingham and the City's 40 wards is derived from Claimant Count data published by the Office of National Statistics.


This fact sheet analyses the number of young people (aged 18-24) claiming Job Seeker's Allowance by gender and by ward.


It shows that:

  • There were 9,760 young people unemployed in April 2008, giving a youth unemployment rate of 15.8%.
  • The male unemployment rate was 20.2% and the female rate 10.6% for this month.
  • In 3 wards the youth unemployment rate is over 25%.
