Comparative Unemployment

Published: June 2008

This fact sheet compares the number of unemployed residents in Birmingham with the number of unemployed residents in other major cities in Britain (the Core Cities) between 1998 and 2008 using the Claimant Count as a measure (residents claiming Job Seekers Allowance).

Birmingham, along with Liverpool, have the highest unemployment rate at 5.3% and Bristol the lowest rate (1.9%). Note that these comparative rates are percentages of the working age population. Figures published elsewhere for Birmingham usually show the rate as a percentage of the economically active population, and are therefore not comparable with this dataset.
