This document is one of a series of information sheets produced by the BEIC to highlight Key Facts about Birmingham.


Population data for the 40 Birmingham wards is derived from the 2001 Census of Population.


This fact sheet records the number of Birmingham residents living in each of the City's 40 wards by age group.


It shows that:

  • There were 228,949 residents aged 15 years or younger at the time of the Census.
  • There were 132,519 young people (aged 16-24) resident in the City in 2001 and 276,804 aged between 25 and 44.
  • 17,065 residents were aged 85 or older.
  • The age structure of the population varies considerably by ward.
