Wages Survey 2000

Published: November 2000

The Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Birmingham Economic Information Centre (BEIC) have combined forces this year to re-launch the Chamber's annual Wages Survey.

The purpose of the Survey is to provide Chamber Members, local companies and inward investors, with timely information on basic salaries and hourly rates of pay in Birmingham.

The Wages Survey is employer based and covers a wide range of occupations in the following sectors:

  • Manufacturing
  • Engineering
  • Hospitality
  • Finance & Insurance
  • Legal Services
  • Advertising & Marketing
  • Computer Services
  • Accountancy/Management Consultants
  • Architects/Construction Services
  • Retailing
  • Wholesale & Distribution

The Sectors were selected on the basis of their importance to the local economy and on the basis that they contained distinctive and sector specific occupations.

Some occupations such as clerical and secretarial occupations are generic across all sectors and so a section of these jobs was added to each sector questionnaire.

The results of the Wages Survey are presented in the form of statistical tables.

When interpreting the results for individual occupations, judgement should be exercised, particularly when the results are based on a small number of respondents per occupation.
