Unemployment Briefing - August 2007

This document is the August 2007 issue of the BEIC's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for July 2007. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


This is the second month where we have included an Unemployment Key Facts Sheet, which gives a summary of the latest data for the city.

July unemployment figures published on the 15th August 2007 show that:

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the U.K. fell by 8,500 in July. The count now stands at 855,300. The rate remained at 3.1%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region fell by 1,100 to 100,700. The rate remained at 4.2%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted jobless total decreased by 1,074 to 33,555 in July. The City's adjusted claimant rate fell to 8.4%.
