Unemployment Briefing - February 2007

This document is the February 2007 issue of the BEIC's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for January 2007. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


January unemployment figures published on the 14th February 2007 show that:

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the U.K. fell by 13,500 in January. The count now stands at 925,800. The rate remained at 3.4%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region fell by 300 to 109,700. The rate fell to 4.5%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted jobless total rose by 928 to 36,323 in January. The City's adjusted claimant rate rose to 9.1%.
