Unemployment Briefing - May 2007

This document is the May 2007 issue of the BEIC's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for April 2007. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


April unemployment figures published on the 16th of May 2007 show that:

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the U.K. fell by 15,700 in April. The count now stands at 890,000. The rate fell to 3.2%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region fell by 2,700 to 103,900. The rate remained at 4.3%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted jobless total decreased by 1,212 to 35,540 in April. The City's adjusted claimant rate fell to 8.9%.
