Unemployment Briefing - October 2007

This document is the October 2007 issue of the BEIC's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for September 2007. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


This is the fourth month where we have included an Unemployment Key Facts Sheet, which gives a summary of the latest data for the city.

September unemployment figures published on the 17th of October 2007 show that:

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the U.K. fell by 12,800 in September. The count now stands at 835,800. The rate fell to 3.0%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region fell by 800 to 101,100. The rate fell to 4.1%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted jobless total decreased by 166 to 33,981 in September. The City's adjusted claimant rate remained at 8.5%.
