Unemployment Briefing - September 2007

This document is the September 2007 issue of the BEIC's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for August 2007. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


This is the third month where we have included an Unemployment Key Facts Sheet, which gives a summary of the latest data for the city.

August unemployment figures published on the 12th September 2007 show that:

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the U.K. fell by 4,200 in August. The count now stands at 852,900. The rate remained at 3.1%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region increased by 300 to 101,400. The rate remained at 4.2%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted jobless total increased by 592 to 34,147 in August. The City's adjusted claimant rate rose to 8.5%.
