Unemployment Briefing - January 2010

This document is the January 2010 issue of Economic Strategy's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for December 2009. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


We also produce an Unemployment Key Facts Sheet, which gives a summary of the latest data for the city.

December unemployment figures published on the 20th of January 2010 show that:

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the UK fell by 19,700 in December. The count now stands at 1,606,500. The rate fell to 5.8%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region fell by 3,804 to 180,500. The rate fell to 7.5%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted claimant rate remained at 12.8%.
