Unemployment Briefing - June 2009

This document is the June 2009 issue of the BEIC's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for June 2009. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


We also produce an Unemployment Key Facts Sheet, which gives a summary of the latest data for the city.

May unemployment figures published on the 17th of June 2009 show that:

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the UK rose by 31,800 in May. The count now stands at 1,544,800. The rate increased to 5.6%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region rose by 1,900 to 175,500. The rate remained at 7.2%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted claimant rate increased to 12.2%.
