Unemployment Briefing - Ju;y 2008

This document is the July 2008 issue of the BEIC's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for June 2008. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


We also produce an Unemployment Key Facts Sheet, which gives a summary of the latest data for the city.

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the UK rose by 15,500 in June. The count now stands at 840,100. The rate increased to 3.1%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region rose by 1,700 to 99,400. The rate increased to 4.1%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted jobless total rose by 338 to 33,741 in June. The City's adjusted claimant rate rose to 8.4%.
