Unemployment Briefing - August 2010

This document is the August 2010 issue of Economic Strategy's monthly Unemployment Briefing. Unemployment data is released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. The Unemployment Briefing is produced using this data and published on the day of each release.


The Briefing contains unemployment totals and rates for July 2010. It presents data for Birmingham, the 40 Birmingham wards, the West Midlands Region and the UK.


We also produce an Unemployment Key Facts Sheet, which gives a summary of the latest data for the city.

July unemployment figures published on the 11th of August 2010 show that:

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment count for the UK fell by 3,800 in July. The count now stands at 1,461,200. The rate remained at 5.3%.
  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment benefit count for the West Midlands Region fell by 1,100 to 159,400. The rate remained at 6.6%.
  • In Birmingham the seasonally adjusted claimant rate decreased to 11.7%.
